Croatian War

1991–1995.

Editorial text · written for the 2026 reconstruction

In late August 1991 the Yugoslav People’s Army laid siege to Vukovar. The city fell on 18 November 1991. On 20 November about 400 non-Serbs were removed from Vukovar hospital, and 194 identified victims were killed at Ovčara (ICTY, Mrkšić et al.). After the ceasefire of early 1992, Croatian forces regained territory in operations including the Medak Pocket (September 1993) and, in the summer of 1995, Operation Storm. The war in Croatia effectively ended in the autumn of 1995. Eastern Slavonia returned to Croatian rule in January 1998 after UN administration.
